Friday, I had posted on the importance of cleansing the first part of the basics for healthy skin. Today I wanted to follow up with toning and moisturizing. I know these steps seem pretty routine, but you would be surprised how many of us don't even do the basics. So lets begin...
What is a toner? A toner is a water based liquid designed to hydrate and lower the pH of the skin. Toners are intended to tone or prepare the skin. Toners reacidify the skin and prepare the skin for the moisturizer. To reacidify means to replace the skin's naturally low (acid) pH. After cleansing and toning you are ready for the next step. Moisturizing.
What is a moisturizer? A moisturizer is an emollient oil-in-water mixture, usually a cream (sometimes a gel), that is spread over the skin to help seal in the moisture. Most contain a humectant (an ingredient that draws moisture to itself) to further hydrate the skin.
Why use a Moisturizer? Moisturizers add a layer of protection between your skin and the outside enviroment. They help to plump up skin cells, which gives the appearance of reducing fine, superficial lines.
What to use. Using a moisturizer that is suited for your particular skin type is very important. If you use an inappropriate product, you can cause some irritation or future problems. Moisturizers (and toners) remain on your skin day and night, whereas cleansers go on briefly and come right off.
When to moisturize. You always want to moisturize after cleansing and toning. You also want to use it both day and night. Again, I want to stress the point of these and any facial products, that you use the product that is suited for your particular skin type (future blogs).
The basic steps are just that "the very basics". If you are under a physicians, care please follow the script the doctor has suggested for you.
